Know This About Oral Cysts

August 30, 2022

Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure carried out on teeth, gums, jaws or other regions that are part of the oral cavity. If you develop a cyst in any of those areas, you’ll need to make an appointment with an oral surgeon.

The office of Miramar Beach Facial & Oral Surgery is an excellent solution for all of your oral surgery needs. Whether you require a procedure that’s minor or one that’s more involved, we provide the expert service you need and expect.

Oral cysts, which are medically called odontogenic cysts, can form in gums, inner lips, inner cheeks, jawbones, tongue and the back of the throat. They come in a variety of types, sizes and acuities. Left untreated, oral cysts can misalign teeth, escalate in severity, turn into emergency situations and ignite numerous problems in other areas of the oral cavity.

The 10 most common kinds are dentigerous, odontogenic keratocyst, calcifying odontogenic, aneurysmal bone, glandular odontogenic, gingival, lateral periodontal, paradental, radicular and residual.

Symptoms of an oral cyst (or cysts) include intense tooth pain, teeth displacement, a lump or pocket filled with liquid in or around your mouth, a constant sore throat, an infection, loose teeth, and trouble chewing and swallowing.

An oral surgeon uses x-rays to determine a cyst’s size, location and variety. Further tests will show if the cyst’s cells are benign (the most-often case) or malignant. The oral surgeon will then decide on the best course of treatment.

Cysts in soft tissues are extracted through a small incision. The location is then cleansed and sewn shut. Patients with cysts in their jaw are under general anesthesia during their surgery. The oral surgeon gains access to the cyst by cutting open a segment of the jaw bone so he (or she) can extricate it. Some cases require the removal of a few teeth; they can be replaced with dental implants.
